School children vote for new road names at The Brooklands
Children from three Bristol schools used their arts and craft skills to vote for the newest streets in their community.
We are building 140 new homes at The Brooklands in north Bristol in partnership with house builder, Vistry, and their Countryside Homes brand. The development will transform the former Dovercourt Road council depot, and Network Rail compound, into a thriving new neighbourhood.
A shortlist of names to vote for was inspired by the site’s rail history, and nearby, newly opened, Ashley Down train station. The pupils designed and decorated their own train and placed it next to the street name of their choice.
Around 240 pupils from Stoke Park Primary School, Ashley Down Primary School and Filton Avenue Primary School chose the three winning names:
- Conductor Close – chosen by Stoke Park Primary School (Year 3)
- Steam Way – chosen by Ashley Down Primary School (Years 3 and 4)
- Whistle Road – chosen by Filton Avenue Primary School (Year 4)
Jane Robinson, Deputy Headteacher at Ashley Down Primary School, said: “It was a really fun way to teach our children about having a voice in their local community, and they’re already looking forward to visiting Steam Way once the development is complete.”
Half of the new homes will be affordable housing, a mix of council rent or shared ownership.
Christiana Makariou, our development director, said: “It’s so important for people young and old to get involved in changes to their community, and we’d like to thank all the children for their fantastic name choices. We can’t wait to invite them to The Brooklands once it’s complete.”
The development will feature solar panels and air source heat pumps, alongside green roofs and electric car charging points. A new public park will sit at the heart of the development. It will include features suggested by the community including table tennis tables, basketball hoops and climbing equipment.
Karina Kava, social value manager for Vistry Bristol, commented: “It was wonderful to see the pupils engaging with this project and voting for their favourite street names. Contributing to your community is so important and the three new street names will connect the children to the area for years and years to come!”
